Indie newcomers Alt-J have won the 2012 Mercury Music Prize.

The band, who formed in Leeds in 2007, were bookes favourite to win the event - and were also picked by Gigwise readers as the band they wanted to see win the award.

The band picked up the award at the London event, hosted at the Camden Roundhouse by 6Music's Lauren Laverne after performing earlier in the night. All 12 nominees performed at the event.

Gigwise viewers shared the same opinions as the bookmakers, voting the band as their pick to take the prize. Gigwise staff backed either Alt-J, The Maccabees, Richard Hawley or Field Music for the award.

A Recent poll by Digital Spy named Plan B's Ill Manors as their pick for glory.

"The sheer range of music here celebrates the abiding ability of British musicians to find new ways to explore traditional themes of love and loss while making an exhilarating soundtrack for life in 2012," said judging panel chairman Simon Frith, as quoted by the Telegraph.

Alt-J add to their growing collection of awards with the 2012 Mercury Prize

Earlier this week, in an interview with Spotify, the band revealed that their only plans for the night were to get drunk at the after party - and tonight they have plenty to celebrate.

The band say they are looking forward to celebrating their success with friends and family at the event, despite believing their chances of winning to be very small.

"We’ll get extremely drunk at an after party with our friends and family," said drummer Thom Green in an interview with Spotify. "Then I’ll recover the next day listening to Radiohead’s In Rainbows and Monstar’s Harder/Bastard."
