When in doubt - smash glass and reach for One Direction. X Factor bosses are so concerned about sliding ratings on this year's UK show, the boyband are said to have been drafted in for an emergency performance this weekend.
The 2010 runners-up are set to perform their new single 'Little Things' on the show this weekend, as ratings plummet. Tabloid rumours suggest that Simon Cowell is so worried about the lack of interest in this year's show, that drafting in 1D is his last resort.
Viewing figures are said to have dropped to just 7.6million, with the show losing over a million viewers in just one week. BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing is said to be pulling in over 10million.
"Everyone is worried about the ratings, particularly Simon. Something has to be done," said an insider on the show to The Sun newspaper. "Producers have known for some time they’ve had a problem with the main show and have decided to bring in chart-topping acts with a big following to boost ratings.
"If anyone can save the Saturday show, it is One Direction, with their massive following. They are the biggest X Factor act ever and everyone hopes they will bring some of their fans with them."
Are these the five who can save the decline in X Factor viewing figures?
The source also reveals that Cowell will stop at nothing to restore X Factor's former glory, adding: “Simon always wants his shows to be number one and this is no different. He’ll do everything it takes to put The X Factor back on top.
Earlier this week, it was rumoured that Cowell was considering trying to tempt former judges Sharon Osbourne, Dannii Minogue and cheryl Cole for a 2013 X Factor 'all-stars' judging panel.
