For his latest role musician and actor Jared Leto has taken steps that most men would dread - he's waxed his whole body.

The 30 Seconds From Mars frontman is preparing for a role in Jean-Marc Vallee's The Dallas Buyer's Club. Leto plays a HIV-positive cross dresser in the movie and stars alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.

The film is loosely based on the real-life story of Ron Woodroof (played by McConaughey), a womanising homophobe who contracts HIV.

Finding the only legal AIDS drugs in the US took him to death's door, Woodroof began smuggling AIDS drugs from around the world into America and selling them to other suffers, leading to a full blown war with pharmaceutical companies.

Leto has begun to prepare for his role with a trip to the beauty salon to have all bodily hair, including his eyebrows, waxed off. ,p> "I just waxed my legs for this new role. Time to get into character. Pluck pluck pluck. Filming this week," Leto tweeted.

"Ladies, I feel your pain," he continued. "What I have learnt today: Beauty is pain."

Leto is no stranger for suffering for his art, though. He starved himself into an emaciated state for his role in Requiem for a Dream in 2000, and in 2007 gained 67 pounds to play Lennon's murderer in Chapter 27.

The Dallas Buyer's Club, due for release next year, will be Leto's first full acting role since 2009's My Nobody.
