Hastings residents have reacted angrily after it was revealed that Chesney Hawkes was the mystery guest booked to open a local ice rink.
Locals had hoped for an appearance from Madness frontman Suggs at the opening of a Christmas ice rink after being promised a 'mystery celebrity' at the opening event. They later launched a 'Go Away Chesney' campaign after flooding Twitter with furious tweets.
"90s legend. Will be a bit long in the tooth by now – we’re planning a Go Away Chesney protest when he arrives here – if anyone can recognise him," tweeted one local, with others questioning if the booking of the 'One And Only' singer was a joke.
Hawkes has defended the booking and himself - claiming that the coverage of the Go Away Chesney campaign has only boosted his fame.
"I've been booked to open the ice rink in Hastings and it seems that someone's complained that I'm not famous enough," he says. "Well I am now. Whoever started this, please get in touch. The least I can do is buy you a drink. Look forward to seeing you next week Hastings."

The Daily Mail reports that Hastings residents were hoping for appearances from Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart or Cliff Richard.
"Hastings has a long line of celebrities, including Suggs and Andy Bell, so why in the world would Chesney Hawkes be chosen to open the Christmas market?" one told the newspaper.
