James Arthur has dismissed concerns that The X Factor could need a makeover following low viewing figures.
The new star was speaking to BBC's Newsbeat about having the fastest selling X Factor winner's single ever, and said, "I can't believe that that many people took the time to download it, that's pretty cool."
He quickly added, "All this stuff about X Factor needing a revamp - it can't need one that much because a lot of people seem to have been interested in my single."
However, the show's finale only pulled in 1.1 million viewers - which is the lowest figure since 2006.
James went on to say that he thinks there's been a lot of talent this year, and that the contestants are beginning to help The X Factor retain some credibility.
He said, "[This year] has been a game changer. People like Lucy Spraggan, Ella Henderson, Jahmene, Kye and so on - all these people are genuine, authentic singer/songwriters.
"Hopefully that's going to encourage real musos to come forward for shows in the future. Then we'll get real authenticity on the X Factor."
James Arthur - not a fan of the 'new' X Factor ideas
Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company Managing Director, said: "There has been a lot said about X Factor's popularity this year and questions have been raised that perhaps its momentum is beginning to wane.
"But this amazing opening performance by James Arthur suggests that it remains the pre-eminent launch pad for new artists."
