The Outstanding Contribution award at the Brit Awards is to be replaced next year with a Special Recognition award.

The BRITs haven't yet confirmed if it is a permanent change, but the award is definitely set to be handed out next year.

The first recipients of the Special Recognition award is to be War Child, a charity which helps children who live in war-torn countries such as Rwanda and Bosnia.

War Child raises money through musical events and ventures, such as the 2012 event at London's Shepherd Bush Empire at which Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon performed, and compilation CDs.

BRITs Chairman David Joseph said of the decision to give War Child the Special Recognition award, "For two decades now, War Child has worked with artists to raise funds and awareness to help children whose lives have been torn apart by war.

"The BRITs are proud to give recognition for their vital work as well as saying thank you to all the artists who have given their time, help and energy to something so important."

The charity has been supported by a number of stars, including Coldplay, Lily Allen and Sir Paul McCartney, amongst others.

McCartney spoke about his choice to support War Child, saying, "A lot of people say that music cannot change the world... I think it really can make a difference."

Madness won't be winning an Outstanding Contribution award next year

He continued, "Music can make people aware, put the issue into focus and shine a spotlight on the bad stuff. It also eats away at the horrors and alleviates some of the pain by raising the money to help these children.

"I have been supporting War Child since 1995. Their work saves lives. I urge everyone to support War Child."

However, it's bad news for Madness, who have said previously that they believe they 'deserve' an Outstanding Contribution award.

Suggs told the Daily Star, "We did a show with Sting recently and I thought, 'Well, if he's got an Outstanding Contribution...'"

Suggs added, "The Brits are meant to be about achievement. Well, if we haven't already achieved enough to win one, I don't know what else we can do."
