Mick Jagger has told an American TV chat show that his drug taking days are over and the only pharmaceuticals he uses are to improve his sex life.

69-year-old, Jagger has been one of the Kings of rock'n'roll for half a century and it seems the time being a Rolling Stones hero as taught him a lot about how to be a rockstar.

Talking on the Letterman show, Jagger told the audience: "You start out playing rock'n'roll so you can have sex and do drugs, but you end up doing drugs so you can still play rock'n'roll and have sex."

This statement was the first of a tongue-in-cheek list that includes signing every tenth autograph and trashing your hotel room before 10pm as not to wake other guests - how considerate.

The Rolling Stones frontman also joked that songs like Marron 5's 'Move Like Jagger' didn't earn him a penny even though he has a net worth of around £190 million.

Jagger, who was a guest on the Late Show With David Letterman in New York also joked that he has learnt never to take relationship advice from legendary producer Phil Spector.

The Rolling Stones are currently on tour in the US to mark their 50th anniversary.

Mick Jagger's top ten tips for a career in Rock'n'Roll

1. You start out playing rock’n’roll so you can have sex and do drugs, but you end up doing drugs so you can still play rock’n’roll and have sex.
2. You can’t always get what you want – like a good joke on the top ten list.
3. Be considerate to other guests – trash your hotel room by 10pm.
4. A good way to keep yourself entertained is to sign every tenth autograph ‘Doris Goldblatt’.
5. Song royalties are great, but even they can’t match the guaranteed cash flow from a reverse mortgage.
6. Everybody you meet after you become famous is only interested in you as a person.
7. You don’t earn a cent when someone does a song about having ‘Moves Like Jagger’.
8. Before shouting ‘Hi Seattle!’ make sure you’re in Seattle.
9. Never take relationship advice from Phil Spector.
10. Nobody wants to hear anything from your new album.
