Now, as much as we love The xx, they wouldn't be top of our list to spend Christmas with. No offence to the Londoners, we just feel there are potentially more festive-minded musicians out there. Mariah Carey for instance - now she LOVES Christmas.
So we are more than pleasantly surprised with The xx's cover of Wham's 'Last Christmas', recorded today (17 December, 2012) for Radio One's Live Lounge. The cover isn't exactly bursting with the festive spirit, but the original was always a bittersweet tale of Christmas heartbreak. So this makes much more sense as a track to cover than, say, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'.
The cover bears all the hallmarks of classic xx, but with heavy synth breaks, and almost a sense of the Christmas spirit in Romy's voice. The cover is quite brilliant indeed.
