Bookies have picked the Hillsborough charity single as their favourite for this year's Christmas number one.

William Hill have given the Justice Collective single odds of 1/7, with James Arthur second favourite with odds of 9/2.

The single, 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother', features Paul Mccartney, Robbie Williams, Shane Macgowan, Mel C and Paloma Faith, among a host of other artists. It will raise funds for the families of the 96 Liverpool fans who were killed in the crush at the Hillsborough stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi final.

The track has been produced by Robbie William's long-time collaborator Guy Chambers, who previously explained his motivation for the track to BBC News.

"If we can help raise money to support the families' legal battle so that they final get their time in court then our job will be done," he said.

"I am deeply honoured to be asked to produce this record for the 96."

The track originally reached number three when it was released by The Hollies in 1969, but reached number one when it was re-released in 1988.

The song has become a favourite among the families effected by what is seen as one of the worst disasters in footballing history, and was inspired by two young Liverpool and Everton fans who walked onto the pitch at Goodison Park together to symbolise the city's unity following the damning Hillsborough report.

The single was launched yesterday at Liverpool's HMV with appearances from Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and comedian John Bishop.

There have been calls for the chancellor of the exchequer to waive the VAT on the single, which he has already done on the X Factor single, the proceeds of which are also to be donated to charity.

Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram, who also appears on the singel, wrote to George Osbourne personally with the request but has not receieved a response yet.
