Gay and lesbian rights group GLAAD has hit out at Azealia Banks after the rapper sent a string of abusive message to Perez Hilton on Twitter.
The '212' star embarked on a rant against Hilton on the weekend, calling the blogger a 'messy faggot' and suggesting he 'kill himself' in a string of message. She later apologised for her use of the word, but an offical statement from GLAAD has criticised Banks' language.
"Banks' claim that the word 'f**got' doesn't mean a gay male is not true. Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do," says a statement from the organisation.
"Undoubtedly there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context. This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it."
Azealia Banks has caused controversy with her use of the word 'faggot'
Banks was previously criticised by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, who hit out at his 'Shady Love' collaborator after reading her words to Perez Hilton.
"Oh yeah. "F*ggot." Totally cool. Give me a fucking break," wrote Shears on Twitter. "It all about context. And right now, I'm sorry, but context is not on your side.
"Donna Summer was ostracized for a decade from words she used about her gay fans. Too bad she didn't have twitter to recant them immediately."
Azealia Banks has also denied that she has parted ways with record label Interscope, after rumours emerged she had been dropped.
