Hip-hop collective The Roots are set to stage a Prince tribute show in order to benefit charity.

The show, which is set to take place at Carnegie Hall in New York, is being organised by philanthropist Michael Dorf and the money will go towards funding music education programmes for underprivileged children.

The concert is due to take place on 7 March and The Roots will be the house band, and will also feature performances from many others including Blind Boys of Alabama, DeVotchka, Madeleine Peyroux, and The Waterboys.

Booker T Jones, Talib Kweli and Living Colour are also going to join The Roots in paying tribute to the songs of Prince.

This is the ninth year in a row that Dorf has organised the benefit, with other concerts being in tribute to bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, REM, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

However, Prince has a reputation of keeping tight control over his music, so the concert is a rare opportunity.

Prince usually doesn't allow other artists to perform his songs

Sky Ferreira is set to perform with The Roots tonight (7 January, 2013) on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, as they will be her backing band.

The concert will be Ferreira's late night TV debut, and it's thought that she will perform latest single 'Lost In My Bedroom'.

Prince, JLS, Bono, Justin Bieber: Short Music Stars

  • Prince, 5'2" – He might be one of the biggest music stars in the world, but when it comes to inches Prince is by a long way one of the shortest.

  • Angus Young of AC/DC, 5'2" – With tunes powerful enough to blow your school uniform off, it's hard to imagine the AC/DC guitarist being short, but he is.

  • Aston Merrygold of JLS 5'6” - Someone has to be the short guy in a boy band, and in JLS that role is left to the diminutive Aston. He probably still bags all the girls though – or at least the short ones from The Saturdays.

  • Pete Wentz, 5'6” - The former Fall Out Boy bassist and is-he-or-isn't-he husband of Ashley Simpson is one of tiniest bass players out there.

  • Kanye West, 5'8” - He raps about being a monster, but the Chicago rapper is hardly up there alongside the Incredible Hulk.

  • Justin Bieber, 5'7” - There's a little uncertainty over just how tall the 17-year-old teen star is because he's still going through puberty. But, lets face it, whether he's 5'4” or 5'7”, Bieber is still no giant.

  • Noel Gallagher, 5'8” - Not only goes Noel have to sit back and watch his brother Liam continue the launch of his new band Beady Eye, but he also faced by the reality that he's shorter as well.

  • Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, 5'7” - His band are massive, but Billie Joe's guitar makes him look like a mere action doll of himself.

  • Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars, 5'9” - When he's not busy pretending to be a rock star, Jared Leto likes nothing better than spending his day tied up by the legs and arms in a bid to be stretched to a more respectable height. (That probably isn't true.)

  • Keith Urban, 5'8” - The Country singer is 5'8” - not short, yet no giant either – but it's not helped when you're partner his Nicole Kidman. Get some bigger shoes Keith.

  • Corey Taylor of Slipknot, 5'7” - Yes, you read right, Corey Taylor – the giant of Slipknot – is actually only 5'7”.

  • Ringo Starr of The Beatles, 5'8"- Perhaps Starr earned the tag “The Forgotten Beatle” because he lacked much kudos in the height department. As a drummer, it doesn't help when you're sitting down either.

  • Tinie Tempah, 5'8” - Well with a name like that, you weren't expecting Tinie Tempah to be a giant were you?

  • Kurt Cobain, 5'7 – The late Nirvana frontman may have left one of the most iconic and intriguing legacies, but he was still a shortie.

  • Paul Simon, 5'3" – Narrowly taller than Prince (that's hardly a claim to fame, is it?), Simon can sleep easy in the knowledge that his music more than makes up for his shortness.

  • Iggy Pop, 5'7” - Being short doesn't stop Iggy Pop from stripping of and flaunting his body around like a 20-year-old. That's why we salute him. Sort of.

  • Roger Daltrey of The Who, 5'7" – If you ever wondered why Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend's path doesn't cross much when they're on stage, it's probably because The Who's guitarist is considerably bigger than his frontman.

  • Thom Yorke of Radiohead, 5'5” - His band have got the big hits, but on stage Thom Yorke is tiny by compassion. It's unclear whether he's a little paranoid (android) about it.

  • Bono of U2, 5'7” - The Irish frontman has long been berated about his height, mainly because he ways what Hollywood has coined “status shoes”. That puts him into a category alongside the similarly short Tom Cruise.

  • Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, 5'6” - A man that looks his height, being 5'6” hasn't stopped Flea from weilding his bass like a madman for the last 20 years. We certainly wouldn't pick a fight with him.
