M.I.A has revealed that her fourth album, Matangi is due out in April, but it could have been released sooner if her record label hadn't told her to make it less positive.

In an interview with Australia's Gold Coast Bulletin, M.I.A admitted that she had handed in the record some time ago and believed it to be finished.

She said: "I thought I'd finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago."

"It's like 'We just built you up as the public enemy No.1 and now you're coming out with all this positive stuff'"

M.I.A's record label told her the new material was 'too positive'

The singer admitted that due to the set-back, the album is yet to be finished, but can be expected this spring.

She continued: "It's due in April, which is the Tamil new year – April 15th – and I'm still working on it."

M.I.A doesn't seem like the type of artist to agree to a record label's every word, but she still isn't sure how to take being told to 'darken it up a bit.'

She said: "I'm taking my time to decide what they mean."
