James Arthur's debut single, and X Factor winner's song, 'Impossible' has now sold over one million copies.

His rendition of r&b singer Shontelle's track 'Impossible' topped one million sales at midnight on Thursday, according to the Official Charts Company, after four weeks of its release.

Martin Talbot, from the Official Charts Company, said, "Hitting the million mark in around a month is a fantastic achievement for James Arthur.

"X Factor winners often score strong first week sales but to push through to the million mark so quickly is truly impressive."

The song was released on 9 December and hit the number one spot the week it was released, although it lost out to the Justice Collective's charity single 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' for the Christmas No.1.

However, 'Impossible' returned to the number one placement the week after - on 30 December - and has stayed there for two consecutive weeks.

It is the 127th song to pass the one million mark in the UK, and is also the fourth fastest-selling debut single from an X Factor winner - right behind Shayne Ward's 'That's My Goal', Alexandra Burke's 'Hallelujah' and Matt Cardle's 'When We Collide'.

'Impossible' could win a BRIT award but has strong competition

'Impossible' was also nominated for the Best British Single at the Brits, which prompted James to tweet, "James is up for Best British Single for #Impossible at this year's @BritAwards show your support!"

In order to win, James will have to beat Coldplay's 'Princess of China', Emeli Sande's 'Next to Me', Robbie Williams' 'Candy' and Adele's 'Skyfall' - which is also Oscar nominated - as well as many more.
