Bowie, MKS and more: ten new tracks of the week

Photo:

This year has certainly got off to a flying start, with tons of new material from all sorts of artists.

The reunited original (real) Sugarbabes unveiled their first new material, A$AP Rocky demonstrated what happens when Florence Welch gets involved in New York rap and, in case you'd forgotten, David Bowie celebrated his 66th birthday by unveiling his first new single for a decade along with plans for a new album in March.

We've selected ten of the best new tracks from this week and collected them all in one place for you listening pleasure.

Enjoy!

MKS - 'Boys'
With the original Sugarbabes lineup back together - Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan - this video was posted on YouTube at the start of the week. The video sees the three sharing lead vocals and collective harmonies on the first new material we've heard since the trio reunited.

Atoms For Peace 'Judge, Jury and Executioner'
Earlier this week Thom Yorke's supergroup, Atom's For Peace, debuted a studio version of 'Judge, Jury and Execution' on Zane Lowe's radio show. An etheral and huanting piece that's exactly what you'd expect from the radiohead frontman.

AlunaGeorge - 'Thinkin Bout You' (Frank Ocean cover)
Hotly tipped to be one of the best things of 2013, AlunaGeorge this week offered up a cover version of Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin Bout You'. Aluna Francis' silky vocals suit the track perfectly.

Apparat - 'A Violent Sky'
German electronic master Sascha Ring - AKA Apparat - this week offered up a preview of things to come on his new concept album, Krieg und Frieden ( Music For Theatre). Wistful and mournful vocals float over a tinkling piano to create something wonderful sombre and introspective.

A$AP Rocky ft Florence Welch - 'I Come Apart'
Of all the names to appear on the track listing for LONG.LIVE.A$AP, Florence might've been the most surprising contributor. A$AP unveiled the track earlier this week, and the two vocalists work together wonderfully in a downbeat, considered sort of way.

David Bowie - 'Where Are We Now?'
Easily the most talked about thing this week, 'Where Are We Now/' is Bowie's first new material to be released for ten years. Fragile vocals and and disconsolate music make the tune slightly cheerless, but many have specualted that that's a response to being 66. Whatever the reason, in the space of a few days Bowie went from recluse to the most talked about musician in the UK (again).

Haim - 'Send Me Down (Dan Lissvik remix)'
Without a doubt Haim are going to be one of the hottest things this year, and since their Sound Of 2013 selection, everyone's watching them. As if to celebrate, Dan Lissvik has this week offered up his remix of 'Send Me Down' upbeat and fully discofied, this is a sure fire foot tapper.

Grimes - 'Skin (Four Tet remix)'
Taken from Four Tet's guest slot on Rinse.fm on Wednesday, the producer remarked "it's just some track I made the other day using a loop from her record... no remix is going on or anything." Still, it sounds pretty great though.

Palma Violets - 'Step Up For The Cool Cats'
Taking the opportunity to prove that all the hype's justified, Palma Violets this week premiered new single 'Step Up For The Cool Cats'. This follow up to 'Best of Friends'/'Last of the Summer Wine' was produced by Pulp's Steve Mackey.

Theme Park - 'Tonight'
Ahead of the release of their self titled debut album, Theme Park unveiled this week premiered their single 'Tonight'. Produced by Friendly Fires' frontman Ed Macfarlane, this dance-y upbeat track promises great things from the album.
