Simon Cowell has spoken of his confidence in the future of The X Factor, despite tumbling viewing figures for the 2012 series.

The X Factor US judge said that reality TV shows will be around for a long time, including The X Factor itself in that.

Simon said to BBC Newsbeat, "For bad shows it's dead, definitely. You've seen with something like the Olympics, when you put something good on, people watch it."

He also spoke about the low viewers of The X Factor, saying, "You've just got to try and make a better show than you did the year before. And if you do that there's a chance you can get the numbers up.

"I never go into anything thinking the numbers are going to go down, because the first thing I say to our production team is you've got to make a better show than last year."

Simon finished by talking about the low ratings and saying that he has no plans of taking The X Factor off air anytime soon.

"I guess there will be conversations then. It will be on TV for a long time to come. Both shows will," he said, adding, "but I want to get this year out of the way first before I think about anything else."
