Vampire Weekend have announce their third studio album's release date.

The new record from the New York indie band will arrive in the UK on May 6 and be released in the US on May 7.

The band's frontman Ezra Koenig recently spoke to NME about the depressing effects of trying to write new material for the album.

"Making every record is a process full of tough times. Invariably that's how it is for us," he said.

"When we started to work a few days a week and really pick things up we immediately had maybe two or three songs that we thought were perfect for this reord, a new vibe, quality songwriting.

"We felt great about them for two or three months, but then after a while you realise, 'OK, we have two or three great songs and we need 11 or 12'.

"Then the depression sets in," he continued. "You don't want to have three great songs and then write nine sh**ty ones."

Last November the band premiered their new track 'Unbelievers' on US TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Last year also saw Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig included among the diverse spectrum of contributors lined up for the new Major Lazer album.

Vampire Weekend's last album, Contra, was released in 2010 and found great success.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 200, a first for the band and only the 12th independently-distributed album to achieve the reach number one on the Billboard 200 since records began in 1991.

They were also the first independent artists to achieve this before signing to a major record label.

Given Contra's success expectations for the band's third album are high, and fans eagerly await the chance to hear more of what the band have to offer.
