Dave Grohl has said that he and the other former members of Nirvana were so in awe at meeting Paul McCartney that they didn’t realise it was a Nirvana reunion.

Grohl, along with Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, jammed with the former Beatle ahead of the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy benefit show, and recorded ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ together at Sound City Studios.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the Foo Fighter’s frontman said: “That day was really funny, because honestly, Krist (Novoselic) and Pat (Smear) had never met Paul (McCartney_ before and they were very nervous – they were terrified. The Beatles meant the same thing to all of us. I mean, without the Beatles we wouldn’t be who we are.”

He continued: “So when we started playing for the first two hours maybe, we were so in awe of Paul that we forgot about Nirvana. It took a few hours before I realised, wait a minute,…we haven’t done this in maybe 20 years, Krist, Pat and I – wow, how cool. And f***in’ Paul is here too.”

Grohl recently said that the collaborative track with Paul McCartney was done in just three hours and that the song ‘came out of nowhere’.

Grohl, one of the most well connected men in music, premiered his documentary about Sound City Studios at the Sundance Film Festival.

To go with the film Grohl has put together a super group, the Sound City Players, to provide the soundtrack, who also performed at the film festival.

The band is formed by artists who have all recorded at the infamous studio at some point.

Grohl has said that he is planning to play shows all over the world with the new band, and hopes that McCartney will be available to play a few of the dates.

“You just cross you fingers and hope that he can make it. A lot of times it’s very last minute. I don’t know if you’ve ever met him, but he’s the greatest.

“He’s the nicest person and loves to play and really understands who he is and what he represents to everybody, but in the best way.”
