Morrissey has issued a statement to a fan site explaining his recent health problems and hospitalisation during his North American tour.

Morrissey was admitted to a hospital in Michigan in January with a suspected bladder infection.

In the statement on the True To You fan site Morrissey writes: “The reports of my death have been greatly understated.”

He continues to explain that he was treated for a concussion, a bleeding ulcer and Barrett’s esophagus, and that he’d had to cancel a numer of shows as a result.

But he said he was keen to pick up his tour as early as next week in Las Vegas.

“I am fully determined to resume the tour on February 9 at the Chelsea Ballroom in Las Vegas. If there’s an audience of any kind in attendance, I just might die with a smile on my face, after all. If I am not there, I shall probably never again be anywhere.”

The statement goes on to thank the audiences at his shows in the US and Australia recently, calling them the best nights of his career.

“Thank you to everyone present at both Brooklyn (New York) and Melbourn (Australia) during recent weeks for two of the best nights of what might charitably be term me “career”. My debt to you will outlive time itself.”

The cancelled shows had already been rescheduled from earlier cancellations

The shows that have had to be cancelled were already among a series of shows that had been rescheduled from last October, when Morrissey returned to England mid-tour to be with his ill mother.
