The X Factor could be making a radical new change for this year's show as a new voting system using Twitter could come into play.

The show's bigwigs have been trying to come up with new ideas to freshen up a series that they are worried has been going stale for quite some time and a free voting system on Twitter could be their answer.

A source told The Sun: "Twitter explodes when The X Factor is on so it makes sense to see if this can be harnessed for voting.

“But, obviously, there is currently no way of charging for this so that could create a problem.”

If the change in voting system goes ahead, fans would simply have to follow @TheXFactor, which would then follow back and send direct messages each week to find out who you want to stay in.

A massive fall in voting figures has meant X Factor executives have been keen to work out a free voting system which they are sure will bring back voters.

Ella Henderson was victim to The X Factor's voting system

Viewers were left shocked last year as favourite, Ella Henderson was booted off at the early stages of the competition. The depature was blamed on fans assuming she was through and not wanting to spend 35p to vote.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are already used for voting in US shows, but the loss of phone line revenue is the biggest hurdle the show must face.

The source added: "Twitter voting may well work in America but there are a lot of obstacles to stopping it from being a realistic proposition in the UK.”
