A deal has today been finalised which will see some of the biggest music artists in the world move from Universal Music Group to rival Warners.
The sale comes as part of Universal's aquisition of EMI music, which it purchased in September of 2012. That deal was only approved on the condition that the industry giant sell some of its assets. Parlophone artists include Air, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Danger Mouse, David Guetta and Iron Maiden. Daft Punk however, are recently believed to have signed a new deal with Columbia music.
Universal clearly saw more potential in the artists they have taken on in the EMI deal, which admittedly include an even more impressive roster than Parlophone. Key bands and artists on EMI include The Beatles, Katy Perry, Emeli Sandé, Robbie Williams, Swedish House Mafia, The Beach Boys, Lady Antebellum, Herbert Grönemeyer, Norah Jones, Tiziano Ferro, Utada Hikaru, Vasco Rossi, Helene Fischer, Smashing Pumpkins, 30 Seconds to Mars, Yumi Matsutoya, Keith Urban, Frank Sinatra, Empire of The Sun and Corinne Bailey Rae.
New label - same old Guetta: don't expect a change in sound from his change to Warners
"Following this transaction, we will continue with our global reinvestment program that is rebuilding EMI and ensuring that the company is able to reach its full potential," stated Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music. “And we’re satisfied that our agreement with Warner Music will provide a home for PLG artists."
The deal is expected to be finalised in late 2013.
