Joss Stone, The Stereophonic and I Am Kloot are among the big name stars who have teamed up to re-record The Beatles' classic album Please Please Me in a mammoth 12 hour recording session.

The album was recorded on 11 February 1963 and in order to celebrate its 50th anniversary, a collection of modern singers, bands and songwriters have taken to Abbey Road to try and re-record the album in the same amount of time.

The performances are being broadcast during the day on Radio 2 and so far the performances have included Gabrielle Aplin's take on 'There's A Place' and Stereophonics performing 'I Saw Her Standing There' on the Chris Evans breakfast show.

Joss Stone put her own spin on 'A Taste of Honey', and Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds performed, 'Do You Want to Know a Secret?'.

The performances are part of 12 Hours to Please Me, and Graham Coxon, Mick Hucknall and I Am Kloot are also involved.

Bob Shennan, from BBC Radio 2, said, "The re-creation of Please Please Me promises to be one of Radio 2's stand-out moments of 2013.

"Hearing those tracks brought to life again with a contemporary twist will have the network buzzing as much as the original did."

He added, "It's one album that changed the world of pop music and I think the 50th anniversary is a timely moment to remind everyone why."

Jo Whiley and Stuart Maconie are hosting the event, which will also see guests including engineer Richard Langham and Beatles press officer Tony Barrow, who were at the original session.
