After 25 years of dipping in and out of different music projects, Johnny Marr has finally embarked on his solo career.

The former The Smiths Guitarist has played with The Cribs, Modest Mouse and contributed to the soundtrack of Inception to name just a few of Marr's ventures, but he has kept fans waiting for any kind of solo material.

Marr is releasing his debut solo album, The Messenger on February 26 and has revealed he just wanted to give fans what they wanted.

He told BBC, "It was my prerogative to try and change peoples' perception of what I might be about and be a bit contrary if I needed to be. But this time out I was going to be OK with it. All the songs now start with my guitar, which I think is what people want."

The legendary rocker also sings on the record and admits to becoming a bit frustrated with modern lyrics not being 'weird stuff from the brain.'

He continued: "I miss people singing weird stuff from the brain. It's all a little bit too earnest for me now. Karaoke culture.

"I like people who sing about their thoughts - whether that comes from observations or telling stories. As long as it isn't some earnest sentimental claptrap."

As for a Smiths reunion, Marr kept his cards close to his chest, but denied that any sort of comeback is going to happen.

Marr said: "No. Er… don't know. I don't know. I don't have an answer to that question."
