BBC 6 Music had to apologise, following an incident in which they played Jimi Hendrix hit 'Hey Joe' after a report on the Oscar Pistorius case.

The station reported on the ongoing trial which involves Paralympic athelete Oscar Pistorius and the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steemkamp.

However, following the news bulletin, they played 'Hey Joe' - a track featuring lyrics about a man who shoots his girlfriend, which Pistorius has been accused of.

The song was originally recorded by The Leaves, but the station played the version recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The lyrics are, "Hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand? I'm going out to shoot my old lady, you know I caught her messing around with another man."

Following the incident, DJ Nemone, who is currently looking after Shaun Keaveny's show, apologised to listeners.

A BBC spokesperson said, "In light of the nature of the news story, we apologise for any offence caused by the proximity of the song 'Hey Joe' to the bulletin.

"An on-air apology was made immediately the mistake was realised."

Oscar Pistorius was yesterday (19 February) formally charged with premeditated murder.

The trial is currently ongoing.
