Simon Cowell says that David Bowie would be his ideal X Factor judge - and has already extended an invitation to the music legend.

Thankfully, Bowie apparently hasn't said yes, and we imagine that he's got enough to keep him busy at the moment, with his upcoming release of The Next Day.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Cowell said, "I think if I could have anyone on The X Factor it would be David Bowie. It’s no secret I've asked him, and he hasn't said yes yet, but I'll keep extending the invitation."

He went on to say, "Why Bowie? He's a legend. He's a great songwriter, he has massive influence on music today and he's 100 per cent credible.

"I'm a fan. Not just of his music but of him, the man. He's cool. Most of us aren't. Bowie is."

We have a feeling that credibility could be exactly why Bowie hasn't said yes - being a judge on The X Factor doesn't exactly do much for it.

Bowie isn't the first star to apparently turn down the role - Rita Ora, Mel B and Jon Bon Jovi have all reportedly passed it over.

Simon Cowell hopefully won't be teaming up with David Bowie anytime soon

Bon Jovi told The Sun, "I was offered all of them last year. But it's not for me because I have a job - we're busy. It's hard for the talent because they're thrust into a huge spotlight, then they win these things and they're expected to have a record that's on par with the greats.

"I had 23 years to write my first record - I was able to develop a career in bars, I would never have won any of those contests. You see them there and they can hit the high notes and then a year later they're a trivia question. It's a big ask of these kids."
