Adele's 21 has been announced as the biggest selling album of 2012 worldwide - for the second year in a row.

The singer's album was released in 2011, but still managed to sell 8.3 million units last year. Coming in second was Taylor Swift with Red, which sold 5.2 million - 3.1 million less than Adele.

The top five was rounded out by One Direction in third and fourth position, selling 4.5 million and 4.4 million with Up All Night and Take Me Home respectively, and Lana Del Rey in fifth with Born To Die selling 4.4 million units.

British artists were also represented by Mumford & Sons at spot number nine, but didn't manage to place in the top five best selling singles at all.

Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' hit the number one spot with 12.5 million copies sold, followed by Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know' selling 11.8m.

Psy's 'Gangnam Style' was at number three, with 9.7m, and fun.'s 'We Are Young' sold 9.6m to make it into fourth place. Fifth place went to Maroon 5, with 'Payphone' shifting 9.1m.

21 was also the biggest selling US iTunes album of 2012, and has constantly been receiving awards - the singer gained six Grammys last year.

However, Adele currently has no plans to start work on the follow-up.

Adele and Paul Epworth could be a winning team on star's next album

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Adele said, "I'm not very far along at all. I'm having lots of meetings. I've been in L.A. the whole time since the Globes and I'll be here till the Oscars.

"So I'm having lots of meetings, but I've been out of the loop, really. I've just been singing my baby nursery rhymes, so I don't really know what's cool and what's not."

Fans will be pleased to know that the singer added, "I'm definitely going to visit with Paul Epworth and talk about doing that again."
