This weekend, a new clip of a Daft Punk track was revealed during a 15 second advert break during Saturday Night Live in the US. Within moments, electro fans were in meltdown and understandably so. Anticipation for the return of Daft Punk is ridiculously high, with fans happy to overlook the 2005 miss-step Human After All and hold out hopes for a new album up to the legacy of Homework or Discovery.
But what can we learn from the SNL clip? Well, very little - lets be honest.
First, here's a reminder of what got wannabe robots the world over so excited. Watch the Daft Punk advert below.
Iconic disco star Nile Rogers is working with the French duo on the album and boy, does it show. The 15 seconds of music we've heard are pure Rogers - and we mean 100% pure Rogers. There's none of the robotic electronica we expect from Daft Punk to be heard on this unnamed track, so what does it mean?
1. The new album isn't a dance album and is instead a laid back disco album
We're open to the idea, but having grown up dancing to 'One More Time', 'Da Funk' and 'Around The World', we're hoping for something with a bigger beat.
2. This is just a small piece of a much bigger picture
Daft Punk are the masters of subtlety, and even their biggest dance numbers masterfully juggle huge electronica with delicate riffs. There's a good chance what we've heard here is simply the opening of a much bigger, much louder production.
3. This is nothing more than a 'hello, we're back' teaser
Perhaps this is nothing to do with their new tracks at all. After all, it's little more than a few beats, licks and loops (although glorious), so it's entirely possible that what we have heard here is not from the big comeback single we're all so eager to hear. After all, can we really expect two men who have spent most of their career dressed as robots to play by the rules?
And that's it really - apart from the most important fact of all: Daft Punk are back, have new music and know exactly how to get their fans whipped up into absolute fever in anticipation. Like Bowie, the boys are going for the softly-softly, take-you-by-surprise approach, and getting maximum impact every time.
After the new image reveal and now the track extract on US TV - who knows where Daft Punk will strike next. All we know, is we can't wait for the rest of this project to unfold. One More Time? Yes please.
