The Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever!, is to get a rewrite to try and turn the tide of opinion after it was slated by critics when it opened.

The musical, which is based around songs by the girls, opened at the start of December last year, but was quickly slammed by critics who called it boring and lifeless.

Musical buffs also criticised the relatively small amount of Spice Girls songs actually included, and said that those that were were almost unrecognisable.

But now producer Judy Craymer - the brains behind the smash hit musical Mamma Mia! - has agreed to rewrite the show ahead of its trasnfer to New York.

A source tells the Daily Mirror: "Judy is doing all she can to make it sharper and funnier. There will also be a few major set reworkings, giving Viva Forever! a fresher feel."

The show's gloomy backdrops had been one of the things criticised when it first opened.

Not only will the show be going to New York, but it has also extended its run in the West End until february next year (2014).

The lack of Spice Girls songs was one of the main criticisms of the show

At the start of this year there were rumours that the show could be axed just weeks after opening because it as playing to empty seats, but a spokesperson for Craymer assured the press this was not the case and said it was simply down to the annual slump in West End ticket sales in January.

Comedian and friend of the girl group Jennifer Saunders was drafted in to write the musical initiallly, but it's not clear if she'll be involved with the rewrite.
