Morrissey has been forced to cancel a number of upcoming US gigs after he was struck down with double pneumonia.

The former Smiths star was due to perform at San Francisco's Regency Ballroom on Saturday, but due to his illness, the show has now been moved to 1 May 2013.

However, sources close to the singer remain confidence he will recover in time to headline a festival in Mexico at the end of this week.

A spokesman told the 'True To You' website: "Morrissey is presently being treated in San Francisco for double pneumonia but remains on course to headline the Vivi Latino festival in Mexico City on March 14."

Morrissey's current illness is the second time this year he has been forced to cancel live shows due to health problems. The grumpy star pulled out of a number of American dates in February due to a bleeding ulcer.

Morrissey has also recently quashed rumours that The Smiths would be the latest band to reform. The singer claimed he and his former bandmates would not follow the trend and reunite.

He said: "There are so many easy victories these days for other bands. But The Smiths were never promoted and almost never received radio play, and this mystery has protected them in the long run."
