The line-up for the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival has been announced, and it includes Patti Smith.
The singer-songwriter is set to perform a homage to Allen Ginsberg with Phillip Glass, who is one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century.
Musical icon Frank Zappa will also be celebrated and, according to the festival's artistic director Jonathan Mills, his status as a "modernist, sophisticated avant-garde composer influenced by Varèse and Cage" will be asserted.
A Beijing production of Coriolanus is also taking place at the festival, featuring two Chinese heavy metal bands. The festival is exploring the relationship between artists and the cutting-edge technology they had at the time.
Audiences can also get involved through Tod Machover, a composer who is asking people to share sounds with him, that he is planning to use for a new work entitled Festival City.
