A new play by Sir Tom Stoppard has been created in order to mark the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd's 1973 record Dark Side of the Moon.

The hour long audio drama will air on BBC Radio 2 on 26 August, and will be called Dark Side. The play will star Bill Nighy and Rufus Sewell, as well as Misfits star Iwan Rheon and Amaka Okafor.

It will also incorporate music from the album, with Pink Floyd member Dave Gilmour calling the script 'fascinating'. He added, "I can't think of a better way to celebrate The Dark Side of the Moon's 40-year anniversary."

Jeff Smith, Radio 2's head of music, said the play would be a "dramatic examination" of the album's themes, with "conflict, greed and madness" among them.

According to the BBC, they first approached Stoppard to write a play based on the album in 1973 - the year the album was released - but he had no idea how to go about it.

The iconic album has now inspired a play by Sir Tom Stoppard

According to Sky News, Stoppard said, "This is more or less, I think, the first time anything like this has been done on radio. I thought 'yes, I definitely want to do that' - but had no idea for a long time what I would do.

"Finally, I found some time and sat down and listened to the album for the thousandth time and picked up from the beginning and kept going."
