Ed Sheeran was given a real sword from the set of The Hobbit by Peter Jackson, but almost managed to impale his mate Taylor Swift on the end of it.

The 'A-Team' singer was travelling on a private plane with Swift to Nashville, and had the sword with him. Sheeran had been given the sword by Peter Jackson after he visited Jackson at his production studio in New Zealand.

"It's like a real sword," Sheeran told MTV News. "I got it shipped over, shipped over to Omaha, so I was bringing it back to Nashville and I think [Taylor] and her crew were weirded out by it anyway. They were just like, 'Why does Ed have a sword?'"

"As the plane started to take off, it was on the table and it went like this," Sheeran continued, making a gesture to indicate the airplane taking off. "The plane is kind of taking off and [the sword] started sliding down and I was like, 'No!' It was just about to impale Taylor."

Luckily, it doesn't seem to have affected Taylor too much, as the star and her dancers apparently took Sheeran out to a blues club while on tour - and Sheeran compared the experience to an episode of Glee.

Taylor and Ed - their tour thankfully didn't end in bloodshed

He continued, "I got taken out by all of Taylor's dancers to like this, it was like a dive bar, blues club. You need to start going out with dancers because they turn every situation into an episode of Glee. It's incredible.

"You're just there and you kind of walk in and suddenly it's strike a pose on the table and then do this kind of dance, and there's like one girl who's grinding up against this old harmonica player and they're all doing these dances."
