Almost half of Justin Bieber's 37 million Twitter followers are fake accounts according to social media analytics experts, Socialbakers. See the graph below.

Bieber was crowned the King of Twitter by fans earlier this year after pipping Lady Gaga to the post for having more followers, but it would appear that Gaga is the true Twitter Queen as they study revealed she has more real followers.

The 19-year-old singer leads the top ten Twitter accounts for fake fans with around 45 per cent of his following believed to be completely fake. This means Bieber actually has around 17.8 million followers compared to Gaga's 19 million.

'Fake' followers are determined as those who follow less than 50 and have less than one follower, has never tweeted or uses Twitter to promote spam and uses words including 'diet', 'make money' and 'work from home'.

The ten most followed Twitter accounts include Katy Perry, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Shakira who all have more real followers than they do fake ones.

Gaga took to Twitter when she found out she had been overtaken by Bieber as the most followed person on the planet.

She tweeted: "So proud of @justinbieber and all the Beliebers! I'm only happy to see your fans growing in size, you all deserve it! Monsters support you".
