Since they first nearly self-combusted several years ago, Paramore’s sound has remained strong, determined and loyal to their Nashville, pop punk roots. After founding members and brothers Zac and Josh Farro left the band in late 2010, Hayley, Taylor and Jeremy have been have been hard at work releasing various singles in the run up to the release of their eponymous album this week.
Lead singer, and most recognised of the Paramore line up, Hayley Williams stated at a gig last week that she dislikes doing interviews, and who can blame her. The seemingly consistent revolving door of member’s must surely detract from discussion of the music, and become tedious for a band with so much to offer. It is fitting then, that the new album is likely not only to silence their critics but also welcome in a new fanbase. Overall the album is more upbeat than previous offerings, and there is a distinct new use of electronic vibes, yet the powerful and witty lyrics which have been a Paramore mainstay over the years, have only gotten better.
A 17 track album it may be, but it does not skimp on notable songs. Opening track ‘Fast In My Car’ is a rebellious anthem and a great way to start the album. Current single ‘Still Into You’ has a catchy chorus and a is love song with a gritty element, whilst inevitably tracks ‘Moving On’ and ‘Grow Up’ allude to former members and the band acknowledging their fraught history and maturely growing up. Final track ‘Future’, which is nearly 8 minutes long, starts slowly, with very few lyrics, allowing the boys to showcase the music. It grows and becomes a perfect rock crescendo, a nod to the future no doubt. Either way, the album is a winner, both for the band, and for their loyal fans.
