It’s one of the most divisive topics in the country at the moment, and now Geri Halliwell has said she hates herself for deleting her Margaret Thatcher Tweet earlier this week.
The former Spice Girl, who’s usually fairly vocal with her opinions, came under fire after Tweeting about her admiration for the recently deceased former Prime Minister.
“Thinking of our 1st Lady of girl power, Margaret Thatcher, a grocer’s daughter who taught me anything is possible...x,” she tweeted.
The Tweet angered many of her followers, who felt that her message of ‘girl power’ support ignored the affects of Thatcher’s political policies.
She was then berated further for being cowardly when she deleted the Tweet.
Writing on her blog a few days later, she spoke of her self-confessed cowardice.
“What I hated the most was that I took a Tweet down. I had wavered and was full of self-doubt,” she admitted.
“When I’m scared, my natural state is to hide and run for cover,” she wrote.
“I was 7 years old when my father told me about the greengrocer’s daughter who had become the first female Prime Minister in our history.
“I was enchanted by this... my father who was always hiding behind the broadsheets spoke about her my whole childhood.
“Fast forward to 1996... It was widely covered in the media, when I casually mentioned that I admired Margaret Thatcher in an interview for a political magazine.
“Monday 8th April 2013 - Margaret Thatcher had died... I felt compelled to Tweet my thoughts for a female leader, in a world governed by men.

“I was so confused and overwhelmed by some of the feedback I received that I took my tweet down and for that I was called spineless.”
Halliwell goes on to say that she was afraid of upsetting anyone, that the response made her question whether she really knew all she should about the former Prime Minister, and that she now wishes she’d had the courage to stand by her convictions in the way she feels Thatcher did.
