One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson is said to be in shock after learning that his cousin nearly died in a house fire last week, with his dog waking him in the night to alert him to the danger.

Tyrone Clarke, Tomlinson’s 21-year-old cousin, is being treated in hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation after a fridge caught fire in his Doncaster home in the early hours of the morning.

Louis and Tyrone grew up together and are said to be very close.

Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, Tyrone told how his dog Rico saved his life.

“I’m lucky to be alive,” Tyrone told the paper.

“When Rico first woke me up, I tried to get back to sleep, but he jumped on the bed and licked my face. I opened my bedroom door and smelled smoke. I tied a scarf over my nose and mouth and ran downstairs.

“The place was full of thick, black smoke. I filled a bowl with water and threw it on the flames. I had to do it several times. There was smoke everywhere and I could hardly breathe. I opened the doors and windows and, after a while, it cleared.

“The only room that didn't have smoke in it was the bathroom, so Rico and me slept in there until my mum came at 8am and took me to hospital. If Rico hadn’t woken me, the whole house would have burnt down. He saved my life.”

He is now recovering in hospital with partner Joleen Cousins and their baby Theo.
