Alison Moyet has revealed that she destroyed or threw away the majority of her career mementos recently, and that she found it liberating.
The 51-year-old former Yazoo star said she smashed her gold discs before throwing them out.
“I took a hammer to them,” she told The Guardian.
“And I’m not being lairy, but there were hundreds.
“I dumped everything... It was f**king brilliant. All my stage clothes - gone. I love it. And I burned all my diaries.
“I really don’t want to own things, it just drags you down.”
She explained that she thought she’d done her children a favour by getting rid of her career souvenirs.
“I don’t care. What is the point? I’ve done [my children] a real service. You die and their left with boxes and boxes of s**t that they are then forced to chuck away.”
Moyet also took the chance to hit back at comparisons between herself and Adele.
“When I saw Adele I thought, ‘I’ll give it an hour before people say I was her’, just because I was fat.
Alison Moyet claims any comparison with Adele stems from the fact she was fat
“When you watch X Factor you can bet your bottom dollar, every single fat singer sounds like me as far as the judges are concerned. Can you imagine if they did that with every black artist?”
Alison Moyet releases her eighth studio album, the minutes, on May 6.
