Lauryn Hill has reportedly dodged being handed a jail sentence for tax evasion after signing a new deal with Sony worth $1million.

The former Fugees singer pleaded guilty to tax evasion last year after failing to file tax returns between 2005 and 2007, during which she earned around $1.8million (£1.2million ) from music and film royalties.

Each count holds a maximum penalty of one year in jail as well as $100,000 (£64,000) fine.

According to AllHipHop, the singer has been given until May 6 to pay off some of the money she owes, and has just signed a new deal with Sony that will help clear some of the debts and see her avoid jail.

As part of the new Sony deal she will write five new songs and will also be given extra funds to record a new studio album.

Hill had previously addressed the tax evasion controversy in a rambling Tumblr post, explaining that she'd "left a more mainstream and public life" during the period to remove herself "from a lifestye that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it."

Hill's show at IndigO2 was her first in the UK for five years

She continued to say she had placed the "safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns" and said she'd "conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period."

She also insisted that her "intention has always been to get this situation recified."

The 37-year-old played her first UK show in more than five years at London's IndigO2 in April.
