Thieves have apparently stolen more than £70,000 (one million rand) in concert takings following a Justin Bieber concert in Johannesburg.

According to local media and police, a gang of thieves broke into the strongroom at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium armed with ropes, hammers and chisels - and officers only realised that the money was missing on Monday morning.

As well as the takings from the Justin Bieber concert, the money also included the takings from a Bon Jovi concert which had also been held at the stadium.

It's thought that the thieves chiseled through a wall at the stadium, which took them several days, before lowering themselves in through the roof with a rope, taking the money and managing to escape.

A police officer from Booysens police station in Soweto said, "The money was taken from the building and they only realised today. We don't know how many people were involved as we are still gathering evidence."

Katlego Mogale, a South African police spokesperson, said, "The suspect had gained entry through the roof.

"They broke the tile of the bathroom between last night (Sunday) after the concert and this morning."
