ABBA's Gold has outsold  The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band to become the second biggest selling album in the UK of all time.

Like The Beatles’ record, ABBA’s greatest hits collection has now sold over 5.1million copies, but according to the Official Charts Company ABBA have now sold 15,000 more than Sgt. Pepper’s... to edge ahead of the Fab Four’s record.

Queen’s 1981 Greatest Hits is still the UK’s biggest selling album ever, having shifted 5.9million copies, Adele’s 21 sits behind ABBA and The Beatles at No. 4 having sold 4.6million copies and Oasis’ seminal ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ completes the top five.

Speaking to Officialcharts.com about the news ABBA founder and songwriter Bjorn Ulvaeus said: “It feels unreal - outselling the greatest record of all time!”

Gold features all of ABBA’s nine No. 1s including ‘Waterloo’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Fernando’, ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Knowing Me Knowing You’, ‘The Name Of The Game’, ‘Take A Chance On Me’, ‘The Winner Takes It All’ and ‘Super Trouper’.

Gold is now the UK's second biggest selling record

The album spent a total of eight weeks at No. 1 in the Official UK Album Chart. Last year it was announced that Gold was the UK’s all-time best selling CD. At the time te record had sold 4million copies on CD format.

Emeli Sande recently beat another Beatles record, with Our Version Of Events becoming the record to spend the longest in the UK albums top ten.

This weekend a guitar played by George Harrison and John Lennon was sold at auction for more than $400,000.
