Prince has signed a new record deal with Kobalt Music Group - enabling him to release his own music along with other artists under his management and guidance.

Kobalt are an independent music publisher designed to allow greater freedom for artists to maintain ownership of their work while controlling when, how and where it is made available.

The deal is sure to appeal to Prince after his long history of record label disputes and legal battles. He famously changed his name to an unpronouncable symbol in his attempt to leave Warner and win back his master tapes, and wrote the word 'SLAVE' on his cheek at the 1995 Brit Awards as an attack against his label's control over his music.

Speaking about the deal, Kobalt President Richard Sanders said: "This new venture gives Prince the flexibility and freedom he's always sought in a label partner.

"We're providing a high level of diverse services that will be particularly customised to his vision for each release, allowing the world to experience more music from Prince and his creative community."

Prince has spent much of the last year releasing his own music and videos via the website 3rdEyedGirl.

He has dates booked throughout Europe in the summer but none in the UK, however there have been some rumours of him contemplating an 'intimate UK tour'.
