Paul Weller has revealed that he is back in the studio and recording songs with a view to releasing a new album for 2014.

The mod icon was speaking to NME whilst backstage at the Isle of Wight Festival 2013 before performing on the Main Stage yesterday (June 15).

Speaking of recording new material, Weller told NME: "We’ve been back in the studio recently and just started writing some songs - maybe towards the next album, it’s early days really.

"We’ve probably done around half a dozen tunes. It’s too early to say, but there’s no overall sound or direction yet. Some tracks probably won’t even make the album. I never know which directon the album is going to go in until we're halfway through and it takes on a life of its own."

Weller is also gearing up for a summer of shows across Europe and the US before embarking on a 10-date UK tour in October. The former The Jam frontman also revealed that he hopes to release a single before the year is out.

Speaking of his plans for the rest of 2013, Weller added: "We've got a UK tour in October and we're going to play in Moscow which will be interesting.

"Hopefully I'll put a new single out towards the end of the year and then crack on with the next record."
