Pixies bassist Kim Deal has quit the band, remaining members of the group have confirmed.
Remaining members Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have released a statement via their official Facebook page regarding Deal’s departure.
“We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.”
Deal is currently touring the 20th anniversary re-release of Last Splash, the landmark release from her other band The Breeders. She is yet to comment on her departure from the Pixies.
The bassist joined the group from its inception in 1986 after answering an ad in a newspaper posted by Black Francis. She reportedly had a difficult relationship with the frontman and felt increasingly sidelined.
The group split in 2993, but reformed in 2004 and toured their 1989 album Doolittle between 2009 and 2011 with Deal on bass.
The Pixies have not toured since then, and Deal worked with The National on their Long Count project with her sister Kelley Deal.

Elsewhere Black Francis recently revealed details of his latest project, a supergroup called Thriftstore Masterpiece. The group are described as “an all-star collective devoted to paying homage to the underdog records of years past.”
Alongside Francis the group comprises Pete Yorn, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, Courtney Taylor-Taylor of Dandy Warhols and Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos and will release their first album, a revival of Lee Hazelwood’s Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, on July 8.
