Psychedelic Australian rockers Tame Impala have hit out at audiences at dance and mainstream festivals, claiming that most of them do not attend to hear any of the music.

Frontman Kevin Parker hit out at hoards of 'Tarzans' in the audience at festivals shortly after the band performed at Bonaroo in the US (16 June, 2013), saying all her saw in crowds were 'guys with muscles'.

"It was a bit more wholesome back then," Parker tells Rolling Stone magazine when discussing seeing Kings Of Leon perform at Australia's Big Day Out in 2006. "Back then, it was more about the music. Now, not so much. Now it's more about muscles and how little clothing you can wear. I guess it's the cool thing now to go to a festival. I've played festivals in Australia.

"If it's a dance music festival or mainstream festival, there's maybe like 10 per cent who pay attention to the music. You just see guys with muscles – essentially Tarzan. A fucking hoard of Tarzans that are like, 'I just want to scope out all the chicks!'"

Parker's comments come after a recent study revealed that less than half of festival audiences, at any event, attend for the bands on offer - with many admitting to having sex with strangers at festivals.

The report, compiled by MSN, stated that just 45% of people attended a festival for music, while 47% said they had done 'something' at a festival they would never consider in real life - such as causal sex or drug taking.
