Legendary concert set designer Mark Fisher, the man responsible for iconic stage sets used by the likes of Rolling Stones, U2 and Pink Floyd has died after a 'long and difficult illness'.

He is reported to have died in his sleep in a hospice in Hampstead, North London.

The Rolling Stones have paid tribute to Fisher, saying in a statement: "We are all extremely saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend Mark Fisher. The remarkable sets he designed for us over the last two decades played a major part in the success of all those tours."

"His passion, dedication and professionalism was infectious. We all loved his dry sense of humour and unflappable demeanour, a quietly soft spoken genius. Mark will be sorely missed – not only by us – but by every single member of ours and any crew he worked with. Our sincere condolences go to his wife and family."

As well as his work for some of the biggest bands of all time, Fisher also worked on set designs for shows such as We Will Rock You and Cirque du Soleil. He acted as Executive Producer at the 2012 London Olympics shows.

Robbie Williams also paid tribute to Fisher this week, dedicating his smash hit 'Angels' to the designer, telling his audience at a Glasgow gig that he was 'responsible for your entertainment tonight'.
