A lock of the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger's hair sparked a bidding frenzy at the Bonhams sale in central London. The curls were suspected to fetch between £1,500 and £2,000 but ended up going for a total of £4,000.

There was speculation that Jagger would instruct a telephone bidder on his behalf for the hair, amidst worries that it could be used to determine DNA as Jagger has been hit with several paternity tests in the past.

Bonhams would only say that the hair went to a UK-based private collector for £4,000. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the charity Changing Faces which supports people with facial disfigurements.

Chrissie Shrimpton, who snipped the hair was The Rolling Stones' frontman's first girlfriend, who he began dating while he was a student at the London School of Economics before fame. The Stones' songs 'Under My Thumb' and 'Stupid Girl' are said to have been inspired by the relationship.

Meanwhile, in other Rolling Stones news, guitarist Keith Richard's lock of hair went for a mere £900 at a similar auction. The clump of hair was cut from his head by a 16-year-old fan Maggie Richardson in the Stones' dressing room in 1964.
