The Rolling Stones hit London’s Hyde Park last night, 44 years after they last played the park, with an explosive opening to the milestone show.
Mick Jagger and co. opened their set with a firework display as they headlined the second day of the Barclaycard {resents British Summer Time festival, playing a two hour set that included ‘Brown Sugar’ and an encore featuring ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’.
Speaking to Absolute Radio ahead of the performance guitarist Keith Richards said: “Well, I’m not emotional but I feel very excited about it. And also, we will have Mick Taylor with us and that was his first gig with the Stones, so there is a kind of full circle being drawn here as well.”
The high-profile show drew a celebrity audience with Ben Whishaw, Gemma Arterton, David Walliams, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie all in the crowd.
The last time the Stones played Hyde Park was their now infamous free gig there on July 5 1969, two days after founding member Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool.

Some fans in attendance on Saturday night were even there to see the 1969 show, with one fan joking with the Metro, “it was free then, and we’ve paid £100 each today - but with inflation I reckon that’s about right.”
The Rolling Stones will play Hyde Park again on July 13, which will apparently be filmed and released as a DVD.
