Mumford & Sons headlined the Summer Stampede at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London last night (July 6) and told the crowd it was a better show than their Glastonbury headline slot.

The band closed Glastonbury Festival with a Sunday night set on the Pyramid stage last weekend, but played to a 60,000 strong crowd at a hometown show last night in Stratford, London, telling the crowd they were a better audience than Worthy Farm.

“Were any of you lot at Glastonbury last weekend?” asked keyboard player ben Lovett.

“It was a very pleasant experience... [but] you guys are shit loads better than at gig ever was.’

Banjo player Winston Marshall added: “Probably because you have’t done as many drugs as the people there.”

The band opened with the title track from their second album Babel, with Marcus Mumford telling the crowd, “We can’t tell you how happy we are to be home. Thanks so much for coming tonight.”

Lovett added that he’d had one of the best days of his life, thanks in part to the lineup which included Vampire Weekend, Bear’s Den, Haim and Ben Howard.

“I think this has been one of my favourite days of my whole life, hands down, no questions asked... Partially down to the bands that played today... and thanks to you 60,000 beautiful London people. We’re so grateful to all of you.”

The band closed their set with an encore cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’, during which they were joined by members of Vampire Weekend, Haim, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

The band also played a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m On Fire’ with all four members of the band crowded around a single microphone.

At the end of the night Marcus Mumford told the crowd, “We decided that you are without a doubt the best crowd we’ve ever played in front of ever.

“We love you very, very much.”
