Manic Street Preachers have opened up about a new anti-Margaret Thatcher song set to feature on their upcoming album, Rewind The Film.

Speaking in this week's NME magazine, bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire said that '30 Year War' was about the ongoing 'class war' following Thatcherite Tory policies of the 1980s.

"It starts with the miners' strike and moves through Hillsborough, and it's a critique of the attack on the working classes over the last 30 years," said Wire. "It's the most spiteful, angry track on the album, and it's almost the link to the other record - it sounds like 'Lodger' era Bowie."

Earlier this week, the Manics announced details of their forthcoming album, Rewind The Film - due for release on 16 September. They also unveiled a video for the title track featuring Richard Hawley.

Talking to Gigwise earlier this year about his collaboration with the Manics, Richard Hawley said: "(Frontman James Dean Bradfield) phoned me and said ‘we’ve written this song and all decided that you have to sing it or it won’t go on the album’. So I just said ‘I can’t let you down’, and it was a great honour."

Hawley continued: "I drove down to Cardiff in a day and it’s a really beautiful song. I play a bit of Hawaiian guitar on it and it’s me and James doing a duet. He sings one part and I sing another. Nick wrote the words that I sing and James wrote his bit so it’s a very personal song and I was surprised that Nicky wanted me to sing it, but now that I’ve done it I can see why. It’s quite dramatic and acoustic."
