Indie guitar band ‘Swim Deep’ are currently on the rise, and with a busy summer of non-stop performances including a large number of festivals. 2013 is an exciting time for the Digbeth based four piece.

We caught up with bassist Cavan McCarthy (‘I’m really hungover’ he admits) who joined the band last year after previous member Wolfgang J Harte left. Cavan feels that 2013 is the year for the guitar band.

"I think 2013 is very very strong for guitar music I think if you look at bands like… you know there’s us Peace, Splashh - so many bands you’ve even got like Haim and bands like that," he comments. "I really think 2013 was a great year for music, probably the best year it’s been in a while."

McCarthy feels that "guitar music maybe need a bit of attitude" but claims not since The Libertines have there been any artists with this ethos. "It’s been so long and no one’s really done it you know".

"Someone needs to stand up, to step up to the plate."

McCarthy was hesitant to state whether he thinks Swim Deep are this band, but commented "We’re writing great guitar music at the minute, so maybe."

Swim Deep’s dreamy, genre morphing debut Where the Heaven Are We drops in August and the bass player admits that he is ‘really excited’ for its release, but disagrees with journalists labelling the band as ‘Grunge Pop’. "I don’t think we sound like anyone that’s making music now, so I think people find it hard to put like a description on our music," he tells us.

The band has this year conquered Glastonbury, T in the Park, Latitude and Benicassim and are now gearing up for Reading, Leeds and Bestival. McCarthy is looking forward to playing at Reading especially, but is ‘gutted’ that they will not be going to Coachella in the US. "Maybe next year," he says.

The band have previously been on the road with the Klaxons, and confess they found an unusual fan in one of Rizzle Kicks while on tour with the nu-rave collective - even if they did make him work in order to hang out with them.

"The guy from Rizzle Kicks was there and he asked to come in our dressing room and I was like 'I’ll only let you come in if you storm into the dressing room singing ‘Down With The Trumpets'' and he was like ‘big deal’ so like he stormed into the dressing room all the lads were sitting there like 'yeah yeah / let’s get down with the trumpets'"

"Everyone was like shocked."

Swim Deep’s debut ‘Where the Heaven are we’ will be release on Vinyl, CD and download in August.
