While established names such as Daft Punk, David Bowie and Queens Of The Stone Age have released some seriously special albums in 2013, we think a little attention needs to be paid to the first timers...

This year's selection of debut releases has been a hugely varied affair, with slinky retro r&b, hard-edged rock, urban dance and Californian skate-pop impressing us greatly so far this year - and we've still got five months to go.

So, as we hit the quiet summer months (seriously, how long do we have to wait for that Arctic Monkeys album?), we look back on the artists who have made their debut in 2013, and the essential first releases you need to make sure you have heard this year...
